Hans Stuurman
Classic Cars: Artworks of Hans Stuurman
Hans writes short stories, makes drawings, plays piano in the bar and the organ in church. He worked in the docks and in factories, in offices and abroad. After this stormy introduction to the labor market, he chose to be a teacher and has been teaching for more than 30 years: in prisons for juvenile delinquents as well as in schools for children with special needs, such as behavioral and mental disabilities. He started out as a basic elementary teacher and subsequently specialized in physical exercise and fine art. As a semi-professional in the Budo sport, he reached the second Dan in both Judo and Karate.
In 1992 a disaster happened in a suburb of Amsterdam called the 'Bijlmermeer', close to Schiphol Airport. An EL AL Boeing 747 went down just after take off and killed 39 people of whom one was a female student in the school in which Hans taught P.E.
Some 15 persons closely related to the school population were also killed in this disaster. To help his students to overcome this trauma, Hans started teaching 'healing drawing' (drawing as a therapy to overcome the traumatic experience).
At the same time Hans started drawing for himself to express to his own emotions. He started out with primary mathematical figures and was inspired by the work of Maurits C. Escher and Oscar Reutersvard. Subsequently more and more people started appearing in his drawings and he developed specific themes. Hans draws intuitively and his drawings reflect his personal development.
